Your story needs something standing in the way
Welcome back to Storytelling 101!
So far, we’ve introduced our character.
Then we discovered what that character wants.
But now…
We need to make things difficult.
That’s where the obstacle comes in.
The obstacle is the thing that gets in the way of your character getting what they want.
And this is where a story gets really interesting.
Because once we introduce an obstacle, something happens in our minds:
We start wondering what’s going to happen next.
Will the character overcome the obstacle?
Will they get what they want?
Do they have what it takes?
That question creates a story loop.
And now we’re invested.
We have to keep reading, watching, or listening because we want to know how the story turns out.
Think about it…
If your character wants something and gets it immediately, where’s the story?
There’s no tension.
No struggle.
No reason to keep going.
The obstacle is what makes us care about the outcome.
Tomorrow, we’re getting into the final part of our Storytelling 101 series: Transformation.
Because when we read a story, one of the biggest things we're looking for is:
How did the character change?
Make sure you come back for that one.
