Your story needs a character

Welcome back to our series, Storytelling 101!

Yesterday, we talked about the four basic ingredients of a story:

Character. Desire. Obstacle. Transformation.

Today, we’re starting with #1:

Character.

Every great story needs a main character.

The main character is the person through whom we experience the story.

They’re the person we’re supposed to care about the most.

And here’s the key:

Your main character needs to be relatable.

The more relatable the character is, the more emotionally invested we become in their story.

Think about the stories you love.

You probably didn't connect with the character because they were perfect.

You connected because you saw something of yourself in them.

Their fears.

Their frustrations.

Their hopes.

Their struggles.

Their desires.

That's what makes us care.

Tomorrow, we're moving to #2:

Desire.

We're going to talk about what your main character really, really wants, which is what starts moving your story forward.
