The 4 parts of a personal brand story
How do you actually put your personal brand story together?
You don't need to tell your entire life story.
You need to tell the right story.
A strong personal brand story can be built around four key parts:
1. SETUP
Start with the before.
Who were you before the transformation?
What was happening in your career, business, mindset, or life?
The key is to give people something they can relate to.
You want them thinking:
“I've been there.”
2. COMPLICATION
Then something changes.
What unexpected event, realization, challenge, or circumstance disrupted your status quo?
Maybe it was a job loss.
A business failure.
A major opportunity.
A difficult season.
A wake-up call.
This is where the story starts getting interesting.
And don't just tell us what happened.
Tell us how it made you feel.
3. STRUGGLE
This is the part most people skip.
And it's often the most important part.
What did you try?
What failed?
What obstacles stood in your way?
Who doubted you?
What were you feeling internally?
What was at stake if you didn't overcome the problem?
Remember:
Without tension, you can't keep attention.
The struggle is what makes people care about what happens next.
4. RESOLUTION
Now we get to the transformation.
What changed?
What did you learn?
How did you overcome the obstacle?
And most importantly:
How does what you went through help you serve other people today?
That's what turns your personal experience into a powerful personal brand story.
Your story isn't just about what happened to you.
It's about what your journey taught you, and how that journey shaped the person and business you are today.
So take some time and ask yourself:
What event divided my life into a BEFORE and an AFTER?
Then work through:
Setup → Complication → Struggle → Resolution
You may be surprised by the story that's been sitting inside your business all along.
Your story is there. Now it's time to tell it well.
