3rd Story Podcast Episode 1: Getting Out of Your Own Way
When Jessy Gonzalez talks about her journey, from childhood sketches on walls to becoming a creative director, there's a recurring theme: getting out of your own way. It’s an idea I’ve heard before, but hearing her story makes it hit differently.
1. The question: “Who do you get to be to do that?”
Jessy’s mentor asked her early on. That shifted her perspective from hesitation to bold action. Instead of focusing on what's uncomfortable, she learned to focus on what she gains. A simple mindset flip from “I don’t like this” to “What am I learning?” transformed her experience at networking events. Now, she sees every conversation as an opportunity, not a threat.
2. The drug dealer mindset:
Jessy describes her branding approach as “selling like a drug dealer.” Not literally, but she offers a taste of her personality, results, and authenticity to hook her clients. The result? A client told her, “It feels like a drug, and I want more of it.” That kind of confidence comes from knowing that being genuine and consistent draws people in.
3. Stepping into boldness:
She emphasizes that you don’t have to have confidence first; you must BE confident, then DO confident things, and eventually you'll HAVE the success.
It’s an inversion of the common “have, do, be” phrase, which she advocates flipping into “be, do, have.” Jessy’s story is about trusting the process and leaning into discomfort. Whether snorkeling with fish at night or pitching her services, she reminds us that growth starts when you step out of your comfort zone and into action.
If you're stuck in your own head, overwhelmed by fear or pride, her words are a reminder: the ability exists within you; you just need to release it. And still, Jessy admits it’s not always easy. “Sometimes, I get in my own way.” But she's learned that the key is to keep moving forward play, learn, and grow.
So, here’s what you need to remember: When you act as the person you want to be, the success follows.
It’s about the mindset, the authenticity, and the willingness to do what scares you and have fun along the way. You're capable of more than you think. Maybe it’s time to ask yourself: who do I get to be today?
